How to prune the crabapple

How to prune the crabapple

The purpose of pruning Begonia

Early flowering of young trees

A very important goal of pruning crabapple is to make it bloom earlier, which can extend the flowering period of crabapple. When pruning crabapples, early-maturing varieties can be topped off multiple times to allow the plants to take shape earlier, expand their crowns, and bloom earlier. For varieties that grow more vigorously, young trees can be lightly pruned and left to grow slowly to make them flower earlier.

Improve lighting

Through pruning, the ventilation and light conditions of the crabapple plants can be improved, so that the crabapple can get sufficient light and grow better.

Improved nutrition

Through pruning, the metabolic capacity of the crabapple can be improved, making its nutrient distribution more reasonable.

How to prune the crabapple

When pruning crabapples, the leading trunk shape is often used.

After the crabapple seedlings survive, winter pruning can be carried out in the first year to shorten the crabapple plants to about 1 meter. In the second year, keep 3 to 5 branches as main branches during the growing season, and cut off all the other branches. In winter, shorten the selected branches. The length can be determined according to the growth of the plant, but the outer buds or side buds need to be retained at the cut. When doing winter pruning in the third year of growth, select side branches on the main branches, and the side branches can be shortened. The outer buds or side buds should also be retained at the cut. Then, by analogy, retain a certain number of side branches year by year.

Things to note when pruning Begonia

When pruning the crabapple tree, you can cut off the worthless long branches and thin branches every year, and shorten the remaining long branches.

When the crabapple plant enters the aging state, some of the larger branches can be cut off, so that the branches can shrink. During the growth period, the new branches need to be pruned off and the weak branches need to be cut off. In addition to retaining the branches that are relatively strong and in the right direction, all the old branches can be pruned off.
