How to propagate heather

How to propagate heather

Heather cutting propagation

Heather cuttings can be propagated in summer, but November is generally chosen. Choose branches that are relatively strong and generally cut them into about 3-4cm. Root the cuttings and plant them in a nursery pot, preferably with a mixture of sand and peat soil.

After the heather is cut, it needs to be placed in a shaded place for maintenance. The temperature should be kept at 15℃-25℃. Be careful not to make it too high. The cuttings will take root one month after cutting.

Normal care is sufficient for the heather to take root, but the tips need to be pinched in time during the growth period. In April, the heather seedlings can be transplanted into pots and placed in a greenhouse for care until the heather grows enough roots.

Heather seed propagation

Heather seed propagation is mainly carried out in spring, using the method of indoor pot sowing. Sow the seeds of heather and keep the germination temperature at 15℃ to 25℃. They will usually germinate 10 to 15 days after sowing.

Heather layering propagation

Layering propagation of heather is carried out in spring and summer using the high pressure method. Peel the bark in a ring shape 15 cm from the top bud of the heather, then wrap it with soil and film, and the peeled area will be able to take roots. When the heather has grown enough roots, you can cut the branches together with the roots in autumn and plant them.

Heather division propagation

Heather can be divided, which is usually done after the flowers have faded, and can be combined with layering.

Cover the branches of the heather to be layered with soil and control watering. A large number of roots will grow in about a month, and then the plants can be divided.
