Common home-grown flowers are divided into two types: cold-resistant and cold-fearing. Cold-resistant plants such as roses, azaleas, osmanthus, iron trees, crabapples, lilacs, hostas, etc. can generally survive the winter safely even if placed outdoors or on balconies. Hyacinths, daffodils, etc. can be grown indoors and will bloom in winter. Cold-fearing plants such as Milan, spider plant, green ivy, and money tree must be moved indoors.

The roots, stems, branches and leaves of many potted plants stop growing at around 5 degrees Celsius. When the temperature reaches 0 degrees freezing, it will be a fatal blow. To be on the safe side, don’t test your plants’ cold tolerance and move them into the house in time.

Preparation for Entry

Before moving flowers indoors, the walls and bottom of the pots should be cleaned to prevent pests from being brought into the room.

Dead branches, diseased branches, and insect-infested branches should be cut off.

Insulation and ventilation

Do not close the windows and doors in the first week after bringing the flowers indoors to allow them to gradually adapt to the temperature change from outdoors to indoors. Otherwise, the leaves of the flowers will easily turn yellow and fall off.

In special circumstances where it is impossible to place the flowers indoors, use large cardboard boxes or wooden boxes or film to create a relatively closed space on the balcony, place potted flowers that are not cold-resistant inside, and then place small heat sources such as electric lamps, hot water bottles, etc. inside to have a heat-insulating and anti-freeze effect.

When the room temperature drops to the lowest temperature for winter, choose a clean plastic bag slightly larger than the potted flowers, cover the potted flowers and seal the bag tightly. Then poke a few small holes in the bag for ventilation. If you find water droplets in the plastic bag, it means that the temperature inside the bag is high and you should ventilate it in time and lift a corner to water it thoroughly.

If the room temperature exceeds 20°C, the doors and windows should be half-opened or fully opened in time to dissipate heat and cool down to prevent "suffocation" that weakens the cold resistance.

Narcissus flower blooming

Generally, narcissus bulbs can bloom as scheduled if they are kept in water for 45-50 days. When the room temperature is raised to about 18℃, it only takes 30 days to bloom; when the room temperature is 20℃, it only takes 25 days to bloom.

1. Increase the temperature and move the plant outdoors in the sun during the day, or in front of a south-facing glass window indoors with plenty of sunlight, until it blooms.

2. Use light to increase the temperature. Cover the flower pot with a plastic cover, turn on the electric light, and stop when the temperature inside the cover rises to 23℃.

3. Turn on the electric heater or place the hair dryer where it will not burn the daffodils. Let the warm wind blow gently over the flowers for several days until the flowers bloom.

4. To increase the temperature of warm water, put a small amount of warm water in the basin and let the water temperature rise to 12-15℃.

Generally, after entering the room, the flowers should be placed in a sunny and warm place indoors, such as in front of a south-facing window.

Potted flowers should be arranged in a staggered manner, with ventilation and light; sun-loving potted flowers should be placed in the front row, shade-tolerant or semi-shade-tolerant potted flowers should be placed in the middle or back row, and the direction of the potted flowers should be changed regularly or irregularly. It is beneficial to the maintenance of potted flowers over the winter and creating conditions for photosynthesis, and it is also beneficial to keep warm and increase temperature, keeping the branches and leaves from being crooked and appearing even and beautiful.

Water and fertilizer management

No need to water frequently. Only when you find that the soil in the pot (below 2 to 3 cm) has dried into powder, or the pot makes a crisp sound when you knock on it, you can water it in an appropriate amount (but not too much). When the lowest temperature of the day is below 0℃, it is best to water at noon.

The yellowing of leaf tips and dull leaf color are mostly due to insufficient indoor air humidity, which does not mean moist soil. For hanging flowers like spider plants and green ivy, always remember to spray water on the leaves to increase the air humidity.

Fertilization should be suspended during the winter as flowers are in a dormant period and do not require much water and fertilizer. If the soil in the pot is too fertile or too wet, it can easily cause the roots of the flowers to rot and die.
