How to prune kumquat

How to prune kumquat

1. Pruning

When pruning young kumquat trees, light pruning is mainly used, and generally only overgrown branches, dead branches, and diseased and weak branches need to be pruned;

When pruning the aging branches of kumquat, it is necessary to cut off the aging branches on the outside of the crown. These old branches have lost the ability to bear fruit and can be cut off from the base;

When pruning the green branches of kumquat, it is generally necessary to keep the strong ones and remove the weak ones. 2-3 buds will grow at the same tip, and you can thin them out appropriately;

When pruning the overgrown branches of kumquat, it is necessary to cut off the overgrown branches, because the overgrown branches are too long, which will not only affect the growth of other sparse branches, but also the lower part of the overgrown branches themselves will be bare, and it is easy to grow into broom branches. So when pruning, you can usually cut it off from the base;

When pruning fruiting branches of kumquat, it is usually necessary to prune dense branches and weak flower branches;

When pruning dead and diseased branches of kumquat, start from the base.

2. Plastic surgery

To set the trunk of kumquat, usually the unpruned kumquat seedlings are pruned and set the trunk. Prune the seedlings when they are 30 cm high, retaining 4 to 5 branches as main branches and the rest can be cut off. After the branches grow, you can do a second and third pruning.

If the kumquat tree has a crooked shape, you can use ropes or hanging stones to adjust the shape of the tree so that it grows more evenly and has a round and full shape.
