How to prune hibiscus

Pruning methods

Seedling pruning

If potted plants are allowed to grow without pruning, the branches will grow in a messy way and the tree shape will not be beautiful, so it is best to prune them in time.

It is best to start pruning from the seedling stage. Prune the hibiscus seedlings when they are about 15 cm tall, leaving 2 or 3 branches, and prune them a second time after the new branches have grown for a period of time.

Large seedling pruning

As the hibiscus plant grows, it needs to be shaped according to its growth conditions. Pruning some branches that grow improperly, are diseased or insect-infested, or are too dense can improve ventilation and light conditions. It is best to prune during the dormant period, and pruning the side branches will help form a good tree shape.

Pruning of flowering branches and old plants

The pruning of hibiscus branches is mainly done after the flowers have faded, cutting off those that consume nutrients to enable them to bloom better. Plants that have already bloomed are usually pruned hard.

Pruning old plants can be done heavily every 1-2 years to promote the sprouting of new branches. It is also possible to dwarf the plants.

Precautions

Before pruning hibiscus, you need to prune it according to the growth condition of the plant to avoid excessive pruning that affects flowering. Be careful not to damage other branches when pruning. It is also necessary to pay attention to retaining side buds. It is best to choose the dormant period as the time for pruning. After pruning, the application of water and fertilizer should be appropriately reduced.
