How to propagate Cymbidium

How to propagate Cymbidium

Propagation of Cymbidium by Division

For plants to be propagated by division, it is generally necessary to choose strong seedlings that have been planted for 2 to 3 years. The best time for division is generally March to April or September to October each year. The substrate required for division should be loose and fertile, breathable and water-draining, free of insects, diseases and pollution, and should avoid heat, dryness and waterlogging. The pH value of the soil should be between 5.5 and 6.5. It needs to be exposed to the sun or sterilized with medicine before use.

Steps for division

Removing the pot: tilt the potted Cymbidium orchid used for division propagation upside down with the pot, pat and shake the pot to make the plant and the substrate gradually remove together. At the same time, pay attention to protecting the leaves and roots.

Digging up seedlings: Use tools to dig up the ground-planted Cymbidium orchids for division propagation, and be careful not to damage the roots and buds.

Division: Find the division point between orchid plants at the base of the pseudobulb and cut it open with a pair of sterilized scissors. After division, there should be at least two Cymbidium plants.

Pruning: Cut off empty roots, broken roots, rotten roots, dead leaves and dry leaf sheaths on pseudobulbs. Also cut off leafless, shriveled, and rotten pseudobulbs.

Disinfection: Apply sulfur powder or charcoal powder to the wound after pruning for disinfection and dry it properly.

Seed propagation of Cymbidium orchid

The method of seed propagation is mainly used for large-scale propagation of native Cymbidium species and hybrid breeding. The seeds of Cymbidium are very small. Under sterile conditions, the seed germination rate is over 90%.
