Spring pruning of roses

Spring pruning of roses

When to prune

It is very important to prune roses in spring. In warmer areas, pruning is usually done in late February. If it is in the colder northern regions, pruning is generally done from March to April.

Pruning methods

When pruning roses in spring, generally one-third of the plant should be cut off, and weak branches, diseased branches, dead branches, etc. need to be cut off.

Prune the branches of the rose, keeping no more than 5 branches. Choose a place where the branches are fuller about 50 cm from the ground, retain strong buds, and prune above the buds. Note that if the cut is soft, you need to cut a section downwards. When pruning, be sure to cut off the old and rough parts of the branches.

Precautions

When pruning roses in spring, pay attention to the following points.

① The main branches of roses that are 2-3 years old are where new buds grow. When pruning, only 10-20 cm is needed.

② If you want the rose to bloom more, you can generally use light pruning. If you don't want the rose to bloom more but want it to bloom well, you can do some heavy pruning. Strong pruning can also be performed on plants that are growing poorly;

③. When pruning, disinfection can be carried out at the same time to prevent and control diseases and insect pests;

④. When pruning, in order to make the rose tree beautiful, you can use supports to fix it and pay attention to protecting the flowers.
