Maintenance methods of calamus in autumn

Caladium after autumn maintenance

Summer is the viewing period for variegated caladium. After the viewing period, it enters autumn and winter, and winter is the dormant period for variegated caladium.

After dormancy, Caladium will sprout again in late spring, but before that it needs autumn care, including autumn management, winter storage and spring planting, so that it can grow normally next year.

How to care for calamus in autumn

Generally, the leaves of Caladium will turn yellow starting from October, and the petioles will wilt and droop. At this time, you need to control watering. When all the leaves of the calamus are withered, take it out of the flowerpot, place it in a well-lit and dry place indoors to dry for a few days, and then store it in sand. The sand must be disinfected first.

The temperature of the sand storage of variegated taro should be kept above 10℃. It should be sprayed with water once every half a month, but it should not be too wet. The surface of the sand can be slightly moist. Be careful not to damage the tubers of Caladium when digging them, otherwise the tubers will rot when stored in winter.

In the spring of the second year, take out the stems of Caladium and cut them into several pieces for planting. The cut stems can be processed first to prevent them from rotting. Just apply wood ash on the cut surface.

When planting, you can choose leaf mold and add some bone meal as base fertilizer, plant the tubers, then water them enough and place them in a dark place for maintenance. When the variegated caladium sprouts, you can place it in a semi-shaded place for maintenance. It is necessary to maintain a certain air humidity.

In addition, when planting tubers, you can choose to place the tubers with the front side facing up, which will cause them to germinate faster, but the growth effect will not be good. You can also plant the tubers of calathea with the back side facing up, so that they will grow more neatly.
