How to prune Nandina domestica bonsai

How to prune Nandina domestica bonsai

Method 1: Short cut

At the end of winter and the beginning of spring, according to the expected design effect, select the potential bud points with appropriate height on the pile and cut them short. Allow it to grow freely in the first year. At the same time in the second year, cut off most of the branches grown in the previous year according to the jungle-style, multi-trunk arrangement requirements. At the same time, cut off the dead branches and leaves, leaving only one or two branches at the bottom. New buds will sprout from the branch axils. Pruning should be done once a year to prevent the main trunk from growing taller year by year, which is beneficial to the fruiting of Nandina domestica.

Method 2: Acupuncture

When the buds sprout in spring, when they grow to about two centimeters, pierce the bud stem with a fine needle, once every centimeter the buds grow. As the bud stems gradually become thicker, the number of acupuncture times should be increased to two to four times. This can hinder the growth of new buds and encourage sprouting on the branches and tops. If this method is used for a long time, new buds will continue to sprout, which can solve the problem of too few branches and too many branches, and can also shorten the length of the branches, thereby controlling the shape of the Nandina domestica. Acupuncture can be carried out until before the Nandina domestica blooms in June, and then it should be stopped. During this period, the clumping Nandina domestica seedlings should be removed in time.
