How to propagate coleus by cuttings

Time for cutting of coleus

There are two methods of propagating coleus: sowing and cuttings, among which cuttings are the simplest. It can be carried out throughout the year. Except for the winter when the temperature is low and the rooting is sufficient, the spring and summer when the temperature is suitable are the best seasons for cuttings.

Coleus branches

Coleus is a perennial herb, but it is mostly cultivated as an annual in households. Very suitable for propagation by cuttings of terminal buds.

Select plants with terminal buds and 3 to 5 nodes. Stem nodes with a length of 5 to 10 cm are used as cuttings. After cutting the cuttings, trim the local leaves to avoid excessive leaves and branches losing water, which may lead to failure of cuttings. Usually all the leaves on the lower part of the branches should be cut off, and it is enough to keep a few leaves on the upper part!

How to propagate coleus

Coleus grows quickly. You can easily plant the strong branches individually in a pot with a diameter of 7.5 cm. After the cuttings are successful, you can directly maintain them in the pot. If there is a large space at home and the environment is suitable, you can plant the cuttings in a larger flower trough.

Rooting time of coleus

Coleus takes root very quickly, and roots will grow about a week after cuttings. Apply dilute liquid fertilizer or slow-release fertilizer 2 weeks after cuttings to allow the coleus to enter the initial growth stage. After the coleus grows normally, it is necessary to pinch the top once to promote branching and improve the ornamental value of the small potted plants.

The seedlings from cuttings gradually grew bigger. It can be grown in pots or in a large pot in a potting mix. In addition, coleus grows rapidly in summer and requires proper pruning to ensure its beauty.
