How to propagate Bauhinia

How to propagate Bauhinia

Seed propagation

Collect mature pods from September to October, take out the seeds, bury them in dry sand, and place them in a cool place to overwinter.

Sowing is from late March to early April. Seeds should be treated before sowing. Soak the seeds in 60℃ warm water. After the water cools down, continue to soak for 3 to 5 days. Replace the cold water once a day. After the seeds absorb water and swell, place them in an environment of 15℃ to germinate. Water them with warm water 1-2 times a day.

After the seeds turn white, they can be sown in the seedbed. The seedlings will be all grown in 2 weeks. Thin out the seedlings appropriately after they emerge.

When the seedlings grow 4 true leaves, they can be transplanted. The soil for transplanting should preferably be loose and fertile loam.

Propagation by division

The roots of Bauhinia can easily produce root suckers. In October in autumn or before germination in spring, use a knife to cut off the suckers and the mother plant, and plant them in the prepared substrate, and they will easily survive.

If the plant is divided in autumn, it should be transplanted to protect it over the winter. It can be transplanted in March in spring and will generally bloom in the second year.

Cutting propagation

Cutting propagation is generally carried out in the summer when Bauhinia is in its peak growth period. The tender branches grown that year are cut off as cuttings and inserted into sandy soil to survive. It is generally suitable for home propagation.

Layering propagation

Layering propagation can be carried out during the growing season of Bauhinia, but it is best in spring, March and April.

Choose 1- to 2-year-old branches, use a knife to cut and ring the bark about 1.5 cm to expose the wood, apply rooting powder liquid about 3 cm above the cut, wait until it dries, cover the cut with a plastic bag, fill it with loose garden soil, and tie the two ends tightly after watering.

Check after one month. If the soil is too dry, water it appropriately. After the roots have taken shape, cut it off and plant it.

For shrub-type trees, you can choose branches with softer outer parts, make a cut at the base, apply rooting powder liquid, bury them in the soil, fix them with bricks and stones, and use wooden sticks to support and straighten the tops.

Generally, the branches are divided and replanted in March of the second year. If some branches do not take root in the same year, they can continue to be buried and pressed, and they can take root in the second year.
