How to graft banyan bonsai

Before grafting: root lifting

Before grafting, lift the roots and shape them according to actual needs. For small potted plants, the roots should be lifted up appropriately 8 to 10 months after planting; for medium-sized potted plants, the roots should be lifted up around December; for large potted plants, the roots should be lifted up after 2 to 3 years of planting, when the tubers are formed.

grafting

The time for grafting is around Qingming Festival or when autumn buds sprout.

The rootstock and scion should be branches grown in the current year, but the scion should be relatively mature.

Use a high-temperature sterilized blade to cut off the top of the rootstock, then cut a 1 cm cut vertically downward along the axis, cut the lower end of the scion into a V shape, and insert it into the rootstock. Wrap the joints with plastic film and spray with water.

Maintenance

After grafting, place the plant in a ventilated and bright place to avoid strong light. Remove the film once a day to ventilate the air, but do not touch the interface directly with your hands. It can be loosened after about 45 days.

After sprouts grow, pay attention to replenishing water to prevent the sprouts from shriveling due to lack of water.

After grafting

Leaf picking

When the grafted plant grows into a chicken claw branch, all the leaves should be removed, leaving 2 to 3 sections on each branch so that all the twigs can grow new leaves and make the tree shape fuller.

Wipe the buds

After the new shoots grow out, cut the leaves in sections. For densely packed and irregular buds, wipe off some of them to prevent the branches and leaves from being too lush and competing for nutrients. At the same time, the direction and position of placement are also used to promote growth.
