How to Overwinter Monstera

How to Overwinter Monstera

Control indoor temperature

Monstera can grow well at room temperature. But Monstera is not cold-resistant. If the temperature drops below 5℃ in winter, it will freeze. The winter temperature of an ordinary household can basically meet its growth needs.

Gradually reduce watering

The amount of watering can be gradually reduced in autumn and winter. In late October, when the temperature drops to around 10℃, move the Monstera indoors for maintenance and gradually reduce watering.

In addition, the dry air in winter can make Monstera uncomfortable. During maintenance, spray the area around the Monstera frequently to increase the humidity, otherwise after a dry winter, the Monstera leaves will slowly wither and die.

Avoid strong sunlight

Also be careful with the winter sun! Monstera is afraid of strong sunlight. Don’t think that the sunlight in winter is weak, the ultraviolet rays in winter are still very strong. Because Monstera is extremely shade-tolerant, there is absolutely no problem keeping it indoors during the winter. Just move to the balcony occasionally to see the sunshine. Especially for newly grafted seedlings, they must not be placed directly in the sun to avoid burning the tender leaves. Adult leaves should also be shielded from light, otherwise the leaves will lack luster and affect the appearance.

Apply thin fertilizer frequently

Monstera is a foliage plant that is relatively tolerant of fertilizer, and should be fertilized frequently with thin layers of fertilizer in winter. In order to make it grow more new leaves and have a natural green luster, apply fertilizer once every half month. When applying fertilizer, be careful not to let the fertilizer liquid stain the leaves. At the same time, the roots of Monstera are relatively tender, so avoid applying raw fertilizers and concentrated fertilizers to avoid burning the roots.

Bundle Plastic Surgery

Monstera is a large foliage plant with thick stems and large leaves. Especially when dividing adult plants, it is necessary to set up a frame and tie them up to prevent them from falling over and deforming. In winter, Monstera grows relatively slowly and needs to be tied and shaped.

The support will be removed after the Monstera is shaped. At the same time, when the leaves at the nodes grow too densely and the branches grow too long after the plant has taken shape, pay attention to pruning the entire plant to achieve a natural and beautiful look.
