Perilla, also known as red perilla, is a native plant in my country and can be grown in all parts of the country. The young leaves and seeds of perilla are edible, and its stems, leaves and seeds have high nutritional value. Many people want to grow perilla, so can perilla be planted by cuttings? Let’s take a look below. 1. Can perilla be planted by cuttings? The main method of propagation of perilla is seed sowing, and the planting time is generally chosen in March or April in spring. Perilla grows very fast. When the temperature is generally stable at around 23 degrees, it only takes about 30 days to grow and can be picked and eaten. In addition to being able to be sown, perilla has the ability to produce adventitious roots and very strong growth branches, which means that perilla can be planted by cuttings, and the survival rate of cuttings is very high. 2. How to grow perilla? 1. Site selection and land preparation Before planting basil, first choose a plot of land with good drainage and sufficient sunlight. Such plots are conducive to the growth of perilla and can reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests. Then, loosen the land, remove weeds and stones, and make the soil fine, which is conducive to the growth of perilla roots. 2. Seed treatment and sowing Perilla seeds are relatively small, so some processing is required before sowing. First, allow the seeds to fully absorb water and swell, then soak them in clean water for 4 hours. Then, take out the seeds, dry them, mix them with fine soil or sand, and prepare them for sowing. When sowing, you can choose to broadcast or drill sowing. When sowing in rows, dig furrows on the prepared land with a row spacing of 20 to 25 cm and a depth of 1 to 1.5 cm. Then sprinkle the seeds evenly into the furrows and cover them with soil. When sowing, spread the seeds evenly on the ground, then cover them with fine sand or fine soil. The thickness should be enough to make the seeds invisible. 3. Field management (1) Watering and drainage: Perilla likes a humid environment, so the soil should be kept moist during the growth period. However, you should also avoid causing root rot and be careful to avoid waterlogging. When the rainy season comes, prevent the soil from being too wet and drain it in time. (2) Fertilization: Perilla has a high demand for fertilizer , so it needs to be fertilized several times during the growth period. Generally speaking, the first top dressing is done when the seedlings are about 5 cm tall, and then top dressing is done every 20 days or so. Fertilizers are mainly nitrogen fertilizers, which can be used in combination with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. (3) Intertillage and weeding: Intertillage can promote root growth and loosen the soil; weeding can reduce the competition of weeds on perilla, allowing it to grow better. Intertillage and weeding are generally carried out in conjunction with fertilization. (4) Pest and disease control: Perilla has relatively few pests and diseases, but you still need to pay attention to prevention and control. Common diseases include rust, leaf spot, etc., which can be prevented and controlled with corresponding pesticides . Common insect pests include red spiders, aphids, etc., which can be controlled with pesticides . 4. Harvesting and processing Perilla is usually harvested in late fall or early winter, when the leaves begin to dry up and the plant stops growing. When harvesting, cut off the above-ground part of the perilla, dry it in the shade or in the sun, and then it can be eaten or used as medicine. If it needs to be processed into products such as perilla powder or perilla oil, further processing is required. That’s it |
