How to propagate the Areca palm

How to propagate the Areca palm

Propagation by division

Division time

Propagation by division can be carried out all year round, and can be done in spring in combination with repotting.

Division method

Select plants with more tillers at the base, remove some of the old potting soil, and use a sharp knife to divide them into several clumps from the base connection. Each cluster should not be too small, there should be 2-3 plants, and the root system should be well preserved.

After dividing the clump, apply wood ash or sulfur powder on the wound for disinfection. Then place the plant in a cool place to dry for a while.

Plant the plants in pots separately. Since the root system has not yet developed, place them in a cool place for maintenance, water them with a small amount, and spray water on the leaves every day to keep them moist. Control the temperature at 20~25 degrees Celsius, otherwise the plants will grow slowly.

The seedlings of Areca palm grow slowly and it takes 1 to 2 years to grow into a slightly larger potted plant. During this period, maintenance should be strengthened.

Seed propagation

Seed selection

The seeds of Areca palm are not easy to obtain, but if conditions permit, they can be obtained from mature plants.

sowing

Wash the freshly picked palm fruit pulp and remove the seeds. Soak the seeds in warm water at 35°C for 2 days before sowing. After the seeds germinate, the seedlings can be transplanted into pots.

Maintenance

Water should be replenished in time from germination to leaf growth. Usually the growth is slow in the seedling stage, so you need to be patient in caring for it. It will grow rapidly after it matures.
