How to grow bougainvillea to make it bloom in summer?

Bougainvillea has a unique plant shape, emerald green leaves, many varieties, and brightly colored flowers. It is a flower that many people like to grow. Bougainvillea can bloom all year round, so how can we grow Bougainvillea to make it bloom in summer? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Get more sun

Bougainvillea is relatively light-loving and cannot do without light from the beginning of its growth period, and the flowering period is no exception. The more sufficient the light, the stronger the plant will be and the more prosperous the flowering. Sufficient light can also enhance the plant's resistance and prevent intrusion by pests and diseases in summer. Therefore, if you want Bougainvillea to bloom more and more vigorously, sufficient light must be provided. Although bougainvillea likes light, it cannot withstand strong light in the hot summer season and needs appropriate shade to survive the summer safely.

2. Apply more fertilizer

Bougainvillea likes fertilizer very much and is generally cultivated in fertile, loose and breathable soil. However, it needs sufficient nutrients during its growth and entire flowering process. Only with a continuous supply of nutrients can it bloom more and more colorfully. Once there is a lack of nutrients in the pot, it is easy to have fewer flowers or no flowers. The fertilization of Bougainvillea is also different. Nitrogen fertilizer is mainly applied during the growth period, while phosphorus and potassium fertilizers must be continuously supplemented during the entire flowering period. The nitrogen fertilizer content is relatively low.

3. Water less

Bougainvillea is native to Brazil, where the climate is divided into dry season and rainy season. Bougainvillea grows in the rainy season and blooms in the dry season. Many people are afraid that Bougainvillea will lack water in the summer, so they water it frequently, which will cause it to grow branches crazily but not bloom. In summer, there should be a limit to watering bougainvillea. The water should not be too much or too little. Observe the plant before watering. If you see the leaves are wilting and drooping, you can water them. It is best to water the plants in the morning when they see them wilting. Sometimes the leaves wilt due to the sun at noon or at night, but it does not mean they are really lacking water. When watering, you must water the flowerpot thoroughly and water it several times to make the soil thoroughly moist and water should be able to flow out of the holes at the bottom of the flowerpot.

4. Adjust pH value

Bougainvillea prefers an acidic environment, but the water and soil in the north are weakly alkaline, which is not conducive to the growth of the root system of Bougainvillea. Therefore, flower lovers in the north need to use "acidic water" or ferrous sulfate for watering regularly. For bougainvillea, the use of ferrous sulfate is not very effective. It is best to use citric acid and then combine it with ferrous sulfate. This will be beneficial for root absorption and can fundamentally change the acidity of the soil.

5. Try not to get wet in the rain

Bougainvillea blooms vigorously in summer. There are so many flowers, so try not to get wet in the rain, as it will cause a large area of flowers to fall. Causes damage to flowers. Shorten its flowering period. When it rains, try to keep it in a sheltered place. It can keep it open for a long time. New flower buds will continue to grow and will not be affected.

6. Do a good job of pruning

When pruning bougainvillea, you can retain 2-3 pairs of nodes on each branch, or prune according to your preference to shorten the branches, promote lateral branches, and promote flower buds. Several lateral branches can be differentiated from a main branch, and the amount of flowers can be at least doubled or tripled.
