How to make hydrangea bloom blue

How to make hydrangea bloom blue

Treatment

The method introduced here does not require any high-tech means, and can easily turn red or pink flowers into blue. In fact, the color of hydrangea is determined by a pigment called anthocyanin. This pigment combines with aluminum ions to produce blue flowers. There are two methods for cultivating blue hydrangeas:

Method 1:

In the first 6 weeks before budding, water with aluminum sulfate solution 3 to 4 times. Solution irrigation has better absorption effect and uniform irrigation.

Method 2:

Another method is to sprinkle aluminum powder directly on the soil, just once. Be careful to keep the soil moist when applying, and you can sprinkle it after watering. If aluminum powder is sprinkled on the leaves, rinse them immediately with clean water.

Precautions

Processing time:

It must be processed 5 to 6 weeks before budding. If it is processed after budding, it will be too late.

illumination:

In high-latitude areas, sunlight is weak in early spring and late winter, so moderate light supplementation is needed. In the summer when there is plenty of sunshine, pay attention to providing adequate shade, as excessive light will also cause the flowers to turn red. Especially in the late stage of bud formation, try to keep it in a cool place.

soil:

To cultivate blue hydrangeas, it is necessary to ensure that the soil acidity is maintained at pH 4 so that the aluminum ions in the pot are in a free state.

Fertilization:

During the cultivation process, try to apply less nitrogen fertilizer, and do not apply ammonium nitrogen fertilizer. Of course, the selected fertilizer should not contain magnesium and iron, otherwise the aluminum applied in the soil will become ineffective.

Selection:

Not all hydrangea varieties can turn blue, so the selected variety should contain delphinium pigment. If the selected variety has too much red pigment, it will turn purple after cultivation. Although it does not meet the requirements, it still has a unique flavor. If it is white, it will become whiter after processing.

So when choosing a variety, don’t feel too burdened. Any variety will have more beautiful colors after cultivation.
