How to repot and prune potted hydrangea

How to repot and prune potted hydrangea

Repotting method

Potted hydrangeas usually need to be repotted and the soil changed once a year, which should be done in early March . The new soil should be a mixture of leaf mold, garden soil and sandy soil in a ratio of 4:4:2 , and a small amount of cake fertilizer should be added.

When removing the plant from the pot, the roots should be pruned. Take the plant out of the pot, shake off the soil at the roots, and cut off rotten roots, broken roots, and excessively long roots. Place it in new soil, compact the soil, water it thoroughly, and then place it in a cool place for 10 days before moving it outdoors for normal maintenance.

Pruning methods

Pruning is not only for beauty but also to allow it to grow better. Cutting off excess branches can reduce nutrient consumption, so that the plant will have sufficient nutrition and bloom beautifully when it blooms. Don’t worry that hydrangea will wither, it has strong vitality and is resistant to pruning.

Topping twice

After the seedlings survive and grow to about 10 to 15 centimeters, they need to be pinched off, cutting off the top of the branches to allow the axillary buds below the plant to germinate.

Then select the 4 new branches on the top and remove all the axillary buds below.

When the new plant grows to 8-10 cm again, repeat the above steps.

Pruning old branches

Annual plants have fewer flowers, and usually more flowers are produced on the two-year-old strong branches. To ensure continued flowering next year, prune in time after flowering.

After flowering, cut the old branches short, leaving 2 to 3 buds to prevent the plant from growing too tall.

In autumn, the top of the plant's new shoots should be cut off to stop the branches from growing and allow them to enter a dormant period.

Try it. This simple cut will create a beautiful shape, greatly enhance its ornamental value and make the plant grow more vigorously.
