How do lotus survive the winter?

south

The winter temperature in the south is higher than that in the north, which can meet the growth needs of lotus and allow them to safely overwinter outdoors. Normal maintenance is sufficient in winter.

north

Lotus flowers usually begin to wither in September, with their leaves turning yellow and withering, leaving only the underground parts. However, the temperature in the north is low in winter, and potted lotus flowers are prone to frostbite if grown outdoors. Therefore, after the lotus withers in September, the dead leaves should be cut off immediately and stored artificially. There are generally three ways:

Indoor storage

Lotus flowers grown at home are rarely kept indoors, but if the indoor temperature can be kept between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius in winter, they can be kept indoors (the editor thinks there may be some problems, as the household temperature in winter is generally around 20 degrees Celsius). If you live in an apartment building, you can simply move the lotus to the windowsill in the corridor. As long as the temperature is kept above 3°C, it can safely spend the winter.

Pool storage

Pool storage: This method is generally not suitable for homes, but is often used in parks or nurseries. Around National Day, place the trimmed potted lotus directly into the pond. The water should submerge the pots. The underwater temperature should be kept at 0-8℃ in winter. Add water frequently to ensure the water temperature. When the temperature is too low in winter, the surface of the pond will freeze, and the lotus can survive the winter by being placed below the ice.

Cold cellar storage

Families with the means can store the lotus directly in a cold cellar. Generally, from late October to early November, the processed lotus should be placed in a cold cellar. The temperature of the cold cellar should be kept between 0℃ and 8℃. In addition, the soil in the pots should be kept moist so that they can safely spend the winter.
