Cabbage planting tips and methods

Cabbage planting tips and methods

Cabbage is a common vegetable in the vegetable garden, but not everyone knows the secret to high-yield growth. Proper planting management methods are crucial to increasing yields. Next, let us learn some tips and methods for growing cabbage.

1. Land preparation before planting

Choose fertile sandy and light clay soil as the planting site, and avoid heavy clay soil and sandy soil with poor water and fertilizer retention. 15-20 days before planting, thoroughly clean up dead branches, dead leaves, diseased plants and weeds in the field, and deep plowing and drying the fields to activate the soil and reduce pathogens and insect eggs.

2. Ridging and fertilization

Apply sufficient base fertilizer: Chinese cabbage requires a large amount of fertilizer, and the base fertilizer should be mainly organic fertilizer and supplemented by chemical fertilizer.

Recommended fertilizer amount: 4000-5000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure + 15-20 kg of potassium chloride + 20-25 kg of diammonium phosphate per mu, or 3000-4000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure + 40-45 kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer + 1 kg of borax.

The use of ridges and furrows for planting is conducive to drainage and waterlogging prevention, and improves soil permeability. The ridge height is 10 cm, the ridge width is 40-70 cm, and the ridge spacing is 20-60 cm. Choose according to planting habits.

3. Planting method

Select seeds with suitable maturity, strong disease resistance and full grains. Soak and mix the seeds before sowing to disinfect and sterilize them and promote germination.

The planting time is late August to early September in the south, and late July to early August or around the beginning of autumn in the north. The planting method is to dig shallow holes or shallow furrows on the ridges for sowing, with a row spacing of 25X35 cm and a sowing amount of about 300 grams per mu.

4. Field Management

Scientific thinning: Follow the principle of "removing the weak and keeping the strong, and scientific seedling spacing", and carry out multiple thinning at appropriate times.

Water and fertilizer management: Keep the soil moist to avoid alternating dryness and wetness; apply quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer during the rosette and heart-forming stages, and apply additional organic fertilizer and potassium fertilizer during the heading stage.

Pest and disease control: Use aluminum ethylene phosphate, mancozeb , carbendazim, etc. to control common diseases; control common pests such as aphids and cabbage loopers.

5. Special Notes

Spray calcium chloride or calcium nitrate during the heading period to prevent "dry heartburn".

Spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution or wood ash filtrate from the rosette stage to the ball-forming stage to improve yield and quality.

In short, through the above detailed planting and management techniques, the yield and quality of cabbage can be effectively improved, bringing richer returns to growers.
