How to grow ginger?

Ginger is a plant that prefers warm and humid climates and has poor tolerance to low temperatures and frost. It starts to germinate when the temperature reaches above 16℃, and the optimal temperature range for seedling growth is 20℃ to 25℃. When the temperature further rises to 25℃ to 28℃, the stems and leaves of ginger grow most vigorously. However, once the temperature drops below 15°C, ginger's growth will stagnate. Therefore, in order to ensure the healthy growth and good development of ginger, suitable temperature conditions must be provided. Let’s learn in detail how to grow ginger.

1. Cultivate strong buds

20 to 30 days before sowing, take out the ginger seeds and wash them thoroughly, then dry them in the sun for 1 to 2 days, taking care to avoid direct sunlight. Carefully select ginger seeds and choose healthy, pest-free, firm, and brightly colored ginger pieces. Avoid using ginger pieces that are soft, shriveled, or discolored. During the germination period, control the temperature at 22 to 25℃ and maintain it for 20 to 25 days to ensure that the buds are thick and plump, and pay attention to moisture retention and ventilation.

2. Land preparation and basal fertilizer application

Choose slightly acidic, breathable, deep and fertile soil, and ensure good irrigation and drainage conditions. Apply sufficient basal fertilizer, such as superphosphate 750 to 1125 kg/ha plus 75 t/ha of well-rotted organic fertilizer to ensure that the soil is flat and fine.

3. Field management

Shading: Ginger cannot tolerate strong light and high temperature, so it needs to be shaded in time to maintain a 60% shading rate. You can choose to cover it with a shade net or use bamboo poles to build a shade shed.

Fertilizer and water management: Water sufficiently before sowing, maintain soil moisture at 65% to 70% during the seedling stage, water in the morning and evening in summer, water once every 4 to 6 days after the beginning of autumn, and maintain soil relative humidity at 75% to 80%.

4. Integrated pest management

Ginger blight: The main disease is characterized by leaf wilting. For prevention and control, you can spray ginger blight or irrigate the roots with dichlorvos, or spray with Bacillus.

Anthracnose and sheath blight: When brown spots appear, use Ai Miao spray to control them and enhance disease resistance.

Cutworm: It will cause damage in the seedling stage. Use dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane or phoxim to fill the holes for prevention and control.

Ginger borer: It harms the heart leaves. Use trichlorfon powder, dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate or chlorpyrifos emulsifiable concentrate to spray for control.

5. Harvest in time

Depending on climatic conditions, harvest before the first frost or at the beginning of autumn to ensure the quality of both seed ginger and fresh ginger.

The above is an introduction to some key points about ginger planting. Ginger is planted in many areas of my country and there are many varieties. You can refer to it and learn from it based on actual situation.
