Cultivation and pruning of Kalanchoe

Cultivation and pruning of Kalanchoe

Kalanchoe is loved by many flower lovers for its continuous flowering characteristics. Correct pruning and cultivation methods are essential to keep it blooming every year. Let’s learn about the cultivation and pruning methods of Kalanchoe below.

1. Breeding methods

1. Choose the right flower pot

Use low pots rather than deep or oversized ones to help prevent water retention.

2. Soil configuration

Ensuring that the soil has good air permeability and water permeability is the key to caring for Kalanchoe.

3. Watering tips

During the growing season, when the soil in the pot is half dry, water it thoroughly in time to prevent the soil from drying out completely. Keep the soil slightly moist during the flowering season and avoid drought. In summer, follow the principle of watering thoroughly when the soil is dry, and water at night when ventilation is good and the temperature is lower.

4. Summer management

Avoid summer rain to prevent black rot and root rot.

5. Fertilization strategy

Use a multi-element fertilizer during the growing season. During the flowering season, choose fertilizers with high phosphorus content, such as Huaduoduo No. 2, and avoid using only potassium dihydrogen phosphate. Fertilize 2 to 3 times a month to ensure adequate nutrients.

6. Ventilation and soil

Maintain good ventilation, avoid using pots that are too large, and ensure the soil is breathable.

2. Pruning method

1. Trimming position

Choose to prune in the middle of two leaf nodes so that new buds will sprout from the leaf axils and increase branching.

2. Trimming height

According to the size of the flowerpot and the shape of the plant, boldly prune it to the appropriate height. Kalanchoe is resistant to pruning and will not be easily damaged.

3. Fertilization after pruning

Immediately after pruning, add high-phosphorus fertilizer, such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate or Huaduoduo No. 2, to promote flowering. Apply once a week, following the principle of "apply small amounts of fertilizer frequently".

4. Add lighting after pruning

After pruning and fertilizing, place the Kalanchoe in a location that receives plenty of light. Adequate sunlight is the key to the repeated blooming of Kalanchoe, and it should be placed in a sunny place such as a south-facing balcony.

In short, the above methods can promote the re-flowering of Kalanchoe and maintain the health and ornamental value of the plant. Remember, proper pruning and adequate light are key factors in Kalanchoe care.
