How to prune peony flowers

1. Early spring pruning

It is suitable to prune peonies from mid-March to early May. You can check the small buds on the branches and only keep 2 to 3 well-grown buds on the top. The rest can be picked off. In addition, check whether the rhizomes have sprouts and can be dug out.

2. Prune after the flowers fade

After the peony flowering period is over, you need to cut off the remaining flowers and flower stems. If you see yellow leaves or dead leaves, you also need to clean them up. This can reduce pests and diseases, and also reduce the consumption of nutrients in the pot, which will help the next flowering.

3. Pruning before winter

From late October to early November, all overlapping branches, crossed branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, dead branches and leggy branches on the peony can be cut off. Thin branches can be shortened to promote their rejuvenation. Some long branches can be appropriately shortened to reduce nutrient consumption.
