How to care for and water Monstera?

Monstera is known for its unique leaf texture and climbing ability. It has well-developed aerial roots and strong adaptability. It is a plant with quite a personality. However, even such plants need proper care to thrive. Let’s learn together how to care for and water Monstera.

1. Environment selection

Monstera prefers a warm and humid environment, but cannot tolerate strong direct sunlight. In warm southern regions, it can be cultivated in the open air, but it is best to choose a shaded place such as under a large tree. Direct sunlight should be avoided in summer to prevent sunburn of the leaves.

2. Common problems and solutions

(1) No back opening

This is usually because the plant is still small or not getting enough light. As the plant grows, it will naturally open up. Make sure the plants are in an environment with diffused light and good ventilation.

(2) Excessive growth and lodging

This may be caused by a dark environment and poor ventilation. Improving lighting and ventilation conditions can solve this problem.

(3) Leaves become smaller

It may be due to lack of fertilizer or not changing the pot for a long time. Ensure fertilizer supply during the growing season and change pots in time.

(4) Root rot

This is usually caused by overwatering which results in waterlogging at the roots. Follow the principle of "water thoroughly when dry" and ensure that the soil has good air permeability and water permeability.

(5) Watering and fertilizing

Monstera grows quickly and requires plenty of water and fertilizer. Apply base fertilizer at the bottom of the pot to meet its high fertility needs. Be careful not to overwater, as this can cause waterlogging at the roots.

(6) Temperature management

Monstera is not cold-resistant and should be placed in an environment not lower than 5 degrees Celsius in winter, and the moisture should be properly controlled. In winter, you can increase the light, while in summer, you should avoid direct light.

(7) Lighting adjustment

In spring and fall, place the Monstera in a location with bright diffuse light to promote healthy growth.

In general, Monstera is a relatively easy indoor plant to maintain as long as you pay attention to light, water, fertilizer and temperature management. If you encounter any problems during the maintenance process, you can leave a message to ask questions.
