Planting and cultivation methods of lilies

1. Planting time

Lilies are suitable for planting in spring and autumn, approximately from March to April or from August to September each year.

2. Pot soil selection

Choose a planting container that has good ventilation and drainage, such as a clay pot or plastic pot. The size of the container should be determined by the variety and growing needs of your lily. Prepare loose, fertile, well-drained soil, which can be a mixture of leaf mold, garden soil and river sand.

3. Planting method

Lilies are usually grown as bulbs or tillers. When planting, bury the lily bulbs or tillers in the soil, and then cover them with an appropriate amount of soil to ensure that they can take root firmly. The planting depth is generally 2-3 times the diameter of the bulb to facilitate the development of the root system and prevent lodging.

4. Water and fertilizer maintenance

After planting the lilies, water them on time, control the amount of water, and keep the soil moist. In addition, when the plant begins to form buds, you can apply appropriate fertilizers to increase the potassium and nitrogen content.

5. Temperature control

The most suitable growth temperature for lilies is between 15-25℃. Too high temperature is not conducive to the growth of the plant. After planting, the temperature needs to be controlled below 15℃. Appropriate low temperature can stimulate germination and is beneficial to the later development of the plant.

6. Pruning tips

Lily is a perennial bulbous plant. Wait until the above-ground stems have completely withered, then cut off all the above-ground stems, keep the bulbs in the soil, and place them in a cool and ventilated place. Be careful not to get wet in the rain. Keep the cultivation temperature above 5℃ in winter and keep the soil in the pot slightly dry. You can dig out the bulbs and replant them in early spring of the following year.

7. Repotting and loosening the soil

Lilies need to be repotted once a year to ensure that the soil nutrients meet the growth needs of their roots. Before repotting, you can loosen the soil and use a shovel to gently lift the soil around it to prevent the soil from becoming compacted.
