When does Clivia bloom? When does Clivia bloom?

1. When is the flowering season?

Clivia usually blooms in spring and summer, around June and July. If the environment is suitable and the maintenance is proper, the plant can bloom in all seasons, and the flowering period is 30-50 days. Before blooming, it will first push out flower arrows, and the flowers grow at the top, usually with several flowers forming an umbel. Each flower is orange-yellow, funnel-shaped, and has 6 petals.

2. How to grow it to bloom

1. Increase light: Clivia is a plant that likes semi-shade, but semi-shade does not mean no light. If you want it to bloom, you must provide an appropriate amount of light. Its short-day characteristics determine that it cannot be exposed to light for a long time, otherwise it will affect the formation of flower buds. It is sufficient to provide 6-8 hours of light a day, and no more than 2 hours during the hot summer season.

2. Control the temperature: Clivia grows well in a warm environment, and the same is true for flowering. If the temperature is too high, the plant will enter a semi-dormant state, and the flower arrows may not grow out, and naturally it will not be able to bloom. If the temperature is too low, the plant will easily be frostbitten, which will also affect its flowering. The general temperature should be controlled at around 20℃.

3. Appropriate fertilization: Appropriate fertilization can supplement nutrients for Clivia, which can also help it bloom. First of all, you should apply enough base fertilizer when repotting, and then apply appropriate top dressing during the growing period. Fertilizers are divided into solid fertilizers and liquid fertilizers. Solid fertilizers include cake fertilizer, bone meal, etc. Liquid fertilizers are mostly made by mixing fermented organic fertilizer with water. Before flowering, you can add phosphorus and potassium fertilizers and apply less nitrogen fertilizer.

3. What to do if you are caught with an arrow

It is a common phenomenon for Clivia to have its arrows pinched. There are many reasons for this phenomenon, such as too low temperature, insufficient nutrition, lack of oxygen in the potting soil, too small temperature difference, root rot, etc. Different causes require different treatments. The first is to control the temperature at around 20℃, and the second is to apply appropriate fertilizer and ensure sufficient water. In addition, pay attention to the temperature difference between day and night, which should be between 5-8℃. If the roots are rotten, remove the plant from the pot, trim it, and then replant it.
