How and when to plant dahlias

How and when to plant dahlias

1. Planting time

Its planting time is not fixed, but it is usually best from March to April in spring.

2. Planting Method

1. Choose the right soil

It likes loose, fertile and well-drained loam and hates clay. When potted, it can be made of leaf mold, garden soil and sandy soil, and a small amount of base fertilizer can be added.

2. Suitable temperature

It likes a cool environment and does not have high temperature requirements during the growth period, ranging from 8 to 35 degrees, but the most suitable temperature is between 15 and 25. In addition, it usually blooms in September, so you must pay attention to cold protection, otherwise the stems and leaves will easily wither.

3. Lighting

It likes light very much, but it should be kept out of direct sunlight during the seedling stage. In winter, you can let it enjoy the light to its heart's content, and then in summer when the light is strong, you need to provide appropriate shade. Otherwise it will affect flowering, but the light cannot be too weak, otherwise the root system will grow poorly or not bloom.

4. Water appropriately

It is not drought-tolerant, but is also afraid of moisture, so watering needs to be done flexibly according to the dryness and wetness of the soil. When in the seedling stage, control the moisture. Then during the growing season, the leaves are very large and need a lot of water. You can increase the amount of water appropriately, but avoid rain on rainy days, and reduce watering after autumn.

5. Appropriate fertilization

It has a well-developed root system and requires a large amount of fertilizer, but concentrated fertilizer cannot be used. Therefore, add enough base fertilizer before planting, and then apply cake fertilizer 4 to 5 times during the growing season. Fertilization should be prohibited in summer.

6. Proper pruning

When it is in the seedling stage, it is necessary to pinch the top appropriately to promote branching, and during the growth period, the side buds should be removed appropriately, but the top buds should be left. Then when the buds appear, you can open them appropriately to make the flowers bigger and more colorful.
