Kiwifruit planting technology and management methods

Kiwifruit planting technology and management methods

As a popular fruit in the market, kiwi fruit has many growers in China. The root characteristics of this fruit are quite unique: the taproot is relatively weak, while the secondary root system is quite developed. These secondary roots are not only widely distributed, but also rich in starch in the root cortex, allowing kiwifruit to absorb abundant water and nutrients from the soil. Let’s learn about kiwifruit planting techniques and management methods.

1. Site selection

When choosing a kiwifruit planting site, key factors to consider include light, water and soil organic matter. Kiwifruit prefers a warm and humid climate and is suitable for cultivation in subtropical and temperate humid and semi-humid areas. Liupanshui City has a subtropical monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 13 to 14 degrees Celsius and a frost-free period of 200 to 300 days, providing ideal growing conditions for kiwifruit. In addition, kiwifruit has high requirements for water and air humidity and is suitable for planting in areas with abundant rainfall and high humidity.

2. Seed selection

Seed selection is crucial to the yield and quality of kiwifruit. Preference should be given to local varieties that are adapted to the local climate.

3. Breeding

Kiwifruit can be propagated by grafting, cuttings or layering. Seed treatment includes warm water soaking for disinfection and cold water soaking, followed by sowing in the seedbed under suitable conditions, and appropriate thinning and transplanting during the growth process.

4. Planting

Before planting, trenches need to be dug according to the terrain and base fertilizer should be applied appropriately. As a vine plant , the planting density of kiwifruit should be moderate. When planting, choose healthy and strong seedlings, and pay attention to the matching of male and female plants to ensure pollination and fruiting.

5. Grafting

Grafting is a key technology to improve kiwifruit yield and quality. Use the single bud grafting method, paying attention to the selection of scion and management after grafting.

6. Intertillage Management

Kiwifruit is sensitive to water and fertilizer requirements, and requires regular topdressing and maintaining suitable moisture conditions. The frequency of watering needs to be increased in summer, and attention needs to be paid to drainage in autumn. In winter, the garden should be cleaned and the soil should be tilled to reduce pests and diseases.

7. Shaping and pruning

Shaping and pruning helps promote the healthy development of kiwifruit trees. Choose the appropriate shaping method according to the type of support, prune at the right time, remove unnecessary branches, and promote the growth of main branches and strong branches.

8. Pest and disease control

Pest and disease control is crucial to ensuring the quality of kiwifruit. A combination of physical, biological and chemical control methods should be adopted, and appropriate control strategies should be selected for different diseases and pests.

In short, through careful cultivation management and pest and disease control, kiwifruit cultivation can achieve high yield and high quality, contributing to agricultural efficiency and increased farmers' income.
