The difference between Michelia purpurogena and Michelia purpurogena

1. Difference of blades

The leaves of Michelia purpurogena are leathery, usually narrowly oblong or narrowly obovate, rarely narrowly elliptical, about 7-13 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, with a long tail-like acute or acuminate tip, a broad cuneate or cuneate base, dark green and glabrous above, light green below, with long soft hairs on the veins.

The leaves of Michelia are narrowly elliptical or obovate-elliptical, smaller than the former, about 4-10 cm long, 1.8-4.5 cm wide, with a blunt and short pointed tip and a broad cuneate or cuneate base.

2. The difference between flowers

As the name suggests, the purple Michelia flower is dark purple or purple-red in color. It has 6 tepals, which are oblong, about 18-20 mm long and 6-8 mm wide. The stamens are about 1 cm long and the pistils are about 8 mm. The flowering period is from April to May every year.

Michelia flowers are relatively upright, light yellow in color, and sometimes purple or red at the edges. The flowering period is from March to May.

3. The difference between fruits

Michelia purpurogenum is an aggregate fruit, about 2.5-5 cm long, with more than 10 follicles, which are flat oval or oblate spherical, with nipple-like protrusions and residual hairs, and the fruit stalk is thick and short. The fruiting period is from August to September every year.

The aggregate fruit of Michelia is smaller than the former, about 2-3.5 cm, the follicles are spherical or ovoid, and the fruiting period is July-August.
