The difference between Gynostemma pentaphyllum and Gynostemma pentaphyllum

1. Leaf Difference

The leaflets of Gynostemma pentaphyllum are ovate-oblong or lanceolate, 3 to 12 cm long and about 1.5 to 4 cm wide, with a sharp tip and a gradually narrowing base. The edges of the leaves have wavy or scalloped teeth, dark green on the upper side and light green on the back. Both sides have short stiff hairs, which are flat on the upper side and convex on the back.

The leaves of the Chinese plum are alternate, membranous, obovate or oblong, 2 to 7 cm long, with a sharp tip, a blunt base, and coarse serrations on the edges.

2. Flower Differences

The flowers of Gynostemma pentaphyllum are in panicles, 10 to 15 cm long, and light green or white in color.

The flowers of the black plum are light green and borne in axillary inflorescences.

3. Fruit Difference

The fruit of Gynostemma pentaphyllum is fleshy, spherical, 5 to 6 mm in diameter, and black, smooth and hairless when ripe.

The berries of the black plum are oval in shape and purple-black when ripe.
