What is Goldfish Chlorophytum?

Goldfish Chlorophytum is a herbaceous flower. Because its flowers look like little goldfish, it is also called goldfish flower. It is native to foreign countries. Now many flower lovers in China are raising it. It is really popular.

The goldfish spider plant not only has beautiful flowers, but its leaves are also fat and green. It looks very beautiful when placed at home and can also purify the air, making it very suitable for home maintenance.

Goldfish Chlorophytum cuttings

Goldfish Chlorophytum is very easy to propagate by cuttings, and it can be done all year round. It is best to choose after flowering, mainly to take advantage of the opportunity to prune after flowering, and the cut branches can fill a pot again.

1. Choose the right branches

If the stem of the goldfish spider plant turns red, it means it has become woody and is not easy to take root. Therefore, it is best for us to choose branches with green stems (non-flowering branches are also fine), about 5-8 cm long.

2. Cuttings in moist sandy soil

Huahua recommends that you use transparent plastic bottles or fast food boxes for cuttings, so that you can see the rooting more clearly, and poke a few holes in the bottom to allow air and water to pass through. It is best to use sand as the substrate and insert the flower branches 2-3 cm deep. Water it thoroughly and put a plate underneath to keep it moist.

Flower lovers who want to be convenient can directly grow roots in water. Find a foam board and insert the flower branches into it, leaving 2-3 cm exposed underneath. Put it in a plastic bottle and it will float automatically to prevent root rot!

3. Place in a cool and ventilated place, and it will take about 10 days to take root

It is best to place the goldfish spider plant in a cool and ventilated place during cuttings, such as the north balcony or windowsill. Spray the soil surface with water every morning and evening. It will take about 1-2 weeks to take root. Continue to observe for another week. After it stabilizes, you can plant it in a pot normally.

Goldfish Chlorophytum does not bloom

The flowering period of the goldfish spider plant is very long, and the flowering time is not fixed. In other words, if you grow it well, it may bloom for several months! Unfortunately, many flower lovers complained that it would not bloom no matter how hard they tried.

1. Control water and water only when the soil is dry

The goldfish spider plant is very drought-resistant. Once it is given too much water, it will only grow leaves but no flowers. Why? Because the conditions are good, it forgets that it can still bloom. After all, plants bloom in order to reproduce and prolong their lives!

In summer, you can water the plants once every 1-2 days, not every day. Or according to the actual situation of your home, touch the soil in the pot with your hand and water it thoroughly if it is dry. With this stimulation, it will have a sense of crisis and bloom.

2. Good ventilation and lighting

The leaves of the goldfish spider plant are thick and fleshy. This kind of flower is afraid of the summer sun and will be sunburned if you are not careful. Some flower lovers therefore put it in a dark place indoors. There is little light, so how can it bloom?

Huahua recommends that non-flowering goldfish spider plants can be exposed to the sun in the morning and evening, or hung on a north balcony or east-west windowsill with scattered light or weak light. Ventilation is beneficial to its metabolism and can accelerate flowering!

3. Pinch and trim

It is easy for the goldfish plant to grow too tall, but many flower lovers are reluctant to prune it. Huahua understands everyone’s hard work in growing flowers, but it is difficult for them to bloom without pruning. Not only will they not bloom this year, they may not even bloom next year!

a. Prune overgrown and redundant branches

The simplest way is to prune it into a spherical shape, cutting off the long branches and cutting them into a uniform spherical surface. Of course, you can also trim it into the shape you like. After trimming, the goldfish plant will grow and bloom harder.

Some people like to grow a ball, some people like a small one, and there are also old goldfish piles that are carefully pruned by flower lovers, which Huahua thinks are also very beautiful~

b. Pinch the heart and let the buds grow again

Many flower lovers say that they have grown their flowers for several years but they still don’t bloom and grow slowly, so they try pinching the heart. Pinching means pinching off the buds at the top of the branches, which can allow the flowers to sprout and branch again. It is possible that the buds that emerge again can form flower buds.

4. Fertilization to promote flowering

The most direct method is to apply fertilizer, mainly phosphorus fertilizer, and add less nitrogen fertilizer, otherwise the plant will only grow leaves but no flowers.

a. Potassium dihydrogen phosphate

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate is a commonly used crop fertilizer and is used in general fruit and vegetable farming. We flower growers should also prepare some. Just dissolve it in clean water (concentration 0.2%) and spray it between the flowers and leaves. It will almost be effective if you spray it once every 10 days.

b. Homemade phosphate fertilizer

Our hair, nails (including those of other animals), fish and shrimp skins, bones, etc. can all be fermented into phosphate fertilizers. In fact, the fastest fermentation speed is in summer. If flower lovers dislike the strong smell, they can choose the soil-buried fertilizer fermentation method.

Bury the collected bones, fish and shrimp skins and other things with soil, and they will be ready after a month of fermentation in summer. This is organic nutrient soil that can be used for all kinds of flowers. One fermentation can last for a year or two!

You don’t need to add too much fermented fertilizer to the flower pot. Just bury it around the edge of the flower pot. Adding too much fertilizer will easily make it larger. However, you need to apply thin fertilizer frequently. After all, the goldfish spider plant is a foodie that likes fertilizer.
