How to grow carnations

1. Breeding environment

1. Soil. Carnations prefer soft, thick, breathable and water-retaining soil. It is best to use sandy soil for breeding, and avoid using soil that is too sticky.

2. Temperature. Normally, carnations should be given a growth condition of 19-21℃, and care should be taken to control the temperature difference between day and night within 10℃. In winter, you should take certain measures to keep warm. It is best to set the temperature above 9℃, and in summer, set it below 35℃.

3. Water. Carnations are very afraid of waterlogging, so do not water them excessively. Do not water too frequently. Wait until the soil is dry before watering.

4. Sunshine. Carnations love sunlight very much. They can usually receive full sunlight, but they still need appropriate shade in the summer. In addition, appropriate shade is also needed during its seedling stage and flowering period.

2. Common pests and diseases

1. Leaf spot disease. If spots appear on the stems or leaves of the plant, it may be suffering from this disease. This requires us to remove the diseased plants in time, stop watering, and then spray maneb or thiophanate-methyl for treatment.

2. Aphids, red spiders, etc. If there are fewer insects on the carnation plants, we can use physical methods to remove them, and then spray medicine to disinfect and kill the insect eggs. If there are many insects on the plant, you can pick off and destroy the diseased leaves, and then spray omethoate solution for treatment.

3. Botrytis cinerea. If the carnation flowers, stems or leaves are covered with gray mold-like substances, it may be infected with this disease. This requires us to remove diseased plants in a timely manner, strengthen ventilation and light transmission, and spray chlorothalonil solution for treatment.

3. Breeding Methods

1. Cuttings. Cut healthy and disease-free branches about 10 cm long with joints, insert them into the soil, water them thoroughly, and place them in a cool place for about a week. After it grows roots, you can put it in a sunny place for maintenance.

2. Sowing. This method is best used in early spring or early autumn. Adjust the temperature to around 20℃, and then you can sow the carnation seeds on the soil prepared in advance. Then cover it with a thin layer of soil, add some water, and slowly nurture it until it sprouts.
