Cultivation methods and precautions of Erqiao peony

The soil of Erqiao Peony

When planting peony, you need to use loose, fertile, well-drained, neutral or slightly alkaline sandy soil. Be careful not to use acidic soil, as peony is prone to poor growth in acidic soil.

How to water the peony

The Erqiao peony is relatively drought-resistant. It needs to be watered appropriately during the growth period. It is better to be dry than wet. Do not let water accumulate in the pot, otherwise the roots will easily rot.

How to fertilize Erqiao peony

The fertilizer requirements of tree peony vary according to the seasons. Generally, decomposed organic fertilizer is used in autumn, while chemical fertilizer is mainly used in spring and summer, and it is applied in conjunction with watering. It is also suitable to apply liquid fertilizer to potted peony.

Pruning of Peony

For the peonies planted this year, only about five branches need to be retained after they sprout in spring, and all other extra branches should be cut off. This can reduce the consumption of nutrients, make the remaining branches more concentrated in nutrients, and make the flowers bigger and brighter. In autumn and winter, it is necessary to cut off the withered flowers and weak branches without flowers in time. For potted plants, the whole plant can be trimmed into shape at the same time.

Loosening the soil and repotting

During the growing period of the peony, it is necessary to weed and insect control in time, carry out disease and pest control, and the soil of plants over two years old needs to be loosened. After growing for three or four years, the size of the potted peony will become much larger. At this time, you need to change the soil and pot or divide the plant in autumn.

Temperature and environment

The Erqiao peony likes a warm and dry environment and plenty of sunshine. It can also tolerate a semi-shaded environment. However, the Erqiao peony is not heat-resistant and hates exposure to the sun. Pay attention to proper shading when cultivating it. The temperature of around 17-20℃ is suitable for flowers to bloom. When the temperature is above 25℃, the peony will go dormant. The flower is relatively cold-resistant, but in the extremely cold areas in the north, you should still take some warming measures to prevent the plants from frostbite.

How to induce flowering

If you want the Erqiao peony to bloom early, you can warm up the peony in advance, control the daily temperature at around 10-25℃, and the average temperature is about 15℃. At the same time, add water appropriately to keep it moist. After the flower buds germinate, pay attention to more ventilation and increased light. If you want to hasten the flowering of flowers due to festivals or events, these operations must be carried out fifty days in advance.
