The main varieties of Mahonia

Broadleaf

It is also known as "big-leaf cork", "mouse thorn", etc. It is an evergreen shrub. Its height is about four meters. The leaves are pinnately compound, about thirty to forty-five centimeters long, and the small leaves are broadly ovate or oblong ovate, six to twelve centimeters long. The apex is pointed and the margin has two to eight teeth, the base is nearly heart-shaped. As for the color, it is green on top and a bit grayish white on the bottom. And its flowers, racemes, have relatively sturdy petioles, one bract, nine sepals, and six petals. The fruit is oval and dark blue.

Fine leaves

It is also called "cat head", "yellow bamboo" and so on. Although it is also an evergreen shrub, its height is not as high as the first type, about one to two meters. Its stem is very upright, has many branches, and is thornless. The base of its leaves is wedge-shaped, and the edges have about six to thirteen serrations. There are also some subtle differences in color, with the underside of the leaves being a grayish-yellow-green without the waxy white powder. The number of petals and sepals is the same as the first type, but the color of the fruit is slightly different. This one is blue-black and has a layer of waxy substance on it.

South China

Its height is about two meters, which is quite different from the first type and similar to the second type. The stem is erect and rarely branched. Its leaves are spike-shaped at the tip and wedge-shaped at the base, with two to six teeth on the edges and are relatively large. Its flowers are loose and drooping and are light yellow in color. Its fruit shape is different from the first two, it is spherical, but the color is similar to the second one, blue-black, and it also has a waxy powdery substance.
