Common flower seed germination methods

Common flower seed germination methods

Water immersion treatment

The seeds of flowers such as Bauhinia, Pearl Bush, and Weigela have a short dormancy period and are easy to germinate. They can be directly sown after soaking in warm water at 40 to 60 degrees for 1-2 days. Some flower seeds have a gelatinous or waxy seed coat, such as the torch tree. The seeds must first be soaked in 90-degree water and allowed to cool naturally for 24 hours to soften the seed coat and absorb water, thus promoting seed germination.

Precautions

When using the water immersion method to treat seeds, the water should be changed frequently. The water temperature should not exceed 60-90 degrees for more than half an hour or an hour, and then the water temperature should be lowered to below 40 degrees, otherwise the embryo will easily die.

Low temperature treatment

Seabuckthorn, wintersweet, forsythia, lilac and some autumn-sown herbaceous flowers require a certain period of low temperature (temperature between 0-10 degrees) to break the dormancy of the embryo and promote seed germination.

How to operate

Mix the seeds evenly with sand with a humidity of 60%, put them into a plastic bag, tie the bag tightly and put it into the flowerpot, then bury the entire flowerpot in the open field at a depth of 40-60 cm. Alternatively, you can place the seeds in a refrigerator at 3-5 degrees for two or three months and wait until spring to sow them. You can also sow in autumn and wait for the seeds to germinate in the spring of the following year after natural freezing in winter.

Temperature change treatment

The seeds of flowers such as tassels, peonies, and peony have the habit of double dormancy in the radicle and hypocotyl. The radicle needs to break dormancy for a month or more under 25-32 degrees, and the hypocotyl needs to break dormancy for a month or more under 3-5 degrees. When handling this type of seeds, mix them with wet sand before sowing, and then switch to low temperature after a period of high temperature.

Precautions

When seeds are subjected to temperature change treatment, it is necessary to ensure that the high temperature period and the freezing period are sufficient, otherwise it will be difficult for the seeds to germinate after sowing.
