Plant some bulbs in winter, and you’ll have flowers to enjoy during the Chinese New Year

Cyclamen

Cyclamen, also known as rabbit ear flower and radish crabapple, is really as its name suggests. When you look at the blooming cyclamen, it does look a bit like a rabbit's ear.

Planting and maintenance

1. Selection: Choose bulbs with a diameter of more than 4 cm and full leaf buds and flower buds in the center.

2. Soil: The choice of soil for cyclamen is very important. It is best to choose sandy soil or other more breathable soil.

3. Planting: When burying the cyclamen bulbs, one-third of them should be exposed above the soil, or the bud points should be exposed outside.

4. Watering: Do not water too much when first planting. Just enough to wet the surface soil is enough. Wait until the roots take root before watering thoroughly. After that, just water it according to the rhythm of watering when the soil is dry and wet.

5. Maintenance: Usually keep it in a cool place. If the leaves grow too densely, it is best to remove some of them manually. Pay attention to fertilizing, even during the flowering period. This can prolong the flowering period.

tulip

All flower lovers should be familiar with tulips. Tulips are known as the queen of flowers in the world, and the tulip fields in the Netherlands should be a place that many people want to visit!

Planting and maintenance

1. Choose large and full tulip bulbs. Generally, they should be disinfected with carbendazim first after purchase, and then soaked in gibberellin solution for 10 to 15 minutes to promote flowering.

2. The potting soil should be prepared by mixing 6 parts of leaf mold, 3 parts of sand, and 1 part of decomposed manure. After planting and germination, ensure sufficient sunlight and water.

3. Apply thin liquid fertilizer once every 10 days or so, and apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer once from bud formation to flowering.

4. Maintain the tulips normally and place them in a bright place to wait for them to germinate. After germination, just water the tulips when the soil is dry. They will bloom into beautiful flowers in spring.

5. Note: The tulip bulbs available on the market are divided into natural bulbs and frozen bulbs. If you want them to bloom during the Spring Festival, you can choose frozen bulbs that have been treated with low temperatures.

Amaryllis

Maybe everyone would like another name of Amaryllis more, Agapanthus, hahahaha, for Chinese people who like many children and good fortune, this flower is indeed a good omen~

Planting and maintenance

1. Clean the bulbs: cut off the rotten and dried roots, and peel off part of the brown and dry outer skin to avoid rotting.

2. Water the bulbs. If the bulbs lose a lot of water due to a long storage period, it is best to replenish the bulbs with water, that is, soak the middle and lower part of the bulbs in clean water slightly higher than the ambient temperature for 1 to 2 hours. Experienced people can add some gibberellins and other plant hormones to the water, which is beneficial to rooting and later bulb expansion, but you need to pay attention to the concentration and soaking time, otherwise it will backfire.

3. Disinfection. It is a key link in planting. Generally, common disinfectants such as carbendazim, thiophanate-methyl, methyl tolbutamide, etc. can be used according to the instructions.

4. Medium selection. In a limited planting space, the choice of medium is very important. It is best to plant Amaryllis in a loose, permeable and slightly acidic medium. The recommended medium is peat: vermiculite:perlite = 2:1:1 or peat:perlite = 1:1.

5. Planting depth. When the bulbs are first planted, at least half of the bulb should be exposed, and the condition of the bulbs should be checked frequently, because the bulbs are very prone to rot during this period. After this period, when the roots and leaves of the bulbs have grown out, cover the bulbs with soil to 1/2 or 2/3 of the bulbs.

6. Watering. Water thoroughly once after planting, and then water again after the soil in the pot is basically dry. Do not apply any other fertilizer except the base fertilizer before the bulbs sprout leaves.

7. Placement environment. After planting, place it in a cool place with a temperature of 10-15℃ to facilitate rooting. After two weeks, move it to a higher temperature of 20-25℃ to facilitate the emergence of flower arrows.

hyacinth

If you don’t look closely at the hyacinth, you might even think it looks like a big ice cream. It looks beautiful and “delicious”!

Planting and maintenance

1. Cut off the withered roots

First remove the dead roots of the bulbs, being careful not to damage the root plate. Try to peel as little as possible, wipe off any mold spots, and tear off the dry skin.

2. Use carbendazim to remove germs

It is best to disinfect and sterilize the bulbs first to prevent mildew. Mix the carbendazim according to the proportion, put the cleaned bulbs in and soak them for about half an hour, then put the bulbs in a cool and ventilated place and dry them for 24 hours. If mold occurs later, you can use cotton cloth or cotton swab dipped in carbendazim solution to wipe the moldy area.

3. Potting hyacinth

Place the hyacinth bulbs in a prepared container, leaving about 2 cm of space between the bottom of the hyacinth and the water.

4. Shading during the rooting period

When hyacinths are first planted in pots, they need to be protected from light. That is, the bulbs and the vase should be placed in a dark place without sunlight. The transparent part of the bottle can be wrapped with plastic bags, newspapers, etc. It is recommended to block light for 15 to 20 days and keep the temperature at around 9 to 10 degrees. Change the water every 5 days and every 7 days after roots grow.

5. Sunbathing during the leaf growth period

After the hyacinth has passed the light-avoiding period, it needs sufficient sunlight to promote the growth of leaves. Otherwise, the plant will easily grow too tall, and in severe cases it will not bloom.

6. Maintenance during the growth and flowering period

It takes about 50-60 days from planting hyacinth to flowering. Flowering requires sufficient light. When the flower buds grow to 5-8cm high (about 8-12 weeks), the vase can be placed in a warm environment. The optimum temperature is 15-21 degrees.

After the hyacinth flower stalks grow tall and bloom, expose them to less sunlight so that the flowering period will be longer. Exposing them to sunlight too often after flowering will accelerate the withering of the flowers and excessive consumption of nutrients.

7. Notes

① About side buds. Most plants reproduce by seeds, but hyacinths reproduce vegetatively, by dividing bulbs to reproduce the next generation, so it is normal for them to have side buds (bulbs).

Personal advice: Beginners can wipe off the side buds and completely abandon them, because given our domestic climate, it is almost impossible to cultivate a small hyacinth bulb into a flowering bulb in a natural environment.

② Regarding the position of the water surface, hyacinths are more susceptible to rot, so when hydroponically cultivating, the water should not submerge the bulb, and there must be a 2 cm gap between the bulb and the water surface.

③ About low temperature treatment. Before hydroponics, you can refrigerate the hyacinth in the refrigerator's fresh-keeping compartment and wait for 2 weeks before taking it out for planting. Because when it moves from a cold place to a warm place, the hyacinth will think that spring has come and will start to take root and sprout.

④ Regarding water changes, it is not recommended unless the water shows signs of turbidity.

⑤ Regarding fertilizer, when there is nitrogen fertilizer in the water, never let the water see sunlight! It will grow algae and damage the roots of hyacinth!

Narcissus

Narcissus, also known as the "Lingbo Fairy", is a fairy in the water, so it must be raised in water.

Planting and maintenance

1. Remove the brown membrane on the outside of the narcissus bulb.

2. To facilitate the growth of flower buds, make a longitudinal cut between the buds on the upper part of the narcissus bulb, cut through 3-4 layers of scales, and then make a horizontal cut on both sides, being sure not to damage the flower buds.

3. Then soak it in water for 24 hours, and a lot of mucus will seep out around the flower buds. These mucus will affect the growth of daffodils and must be cleaned.

4. After washing off the mucus, you can place it in a basin for cultivation.

5. Place it in a sunny place during the day and keep the temperature above 15 degrees. Pour out the water in the pot at night and add water again the next morning to prevent the leaves from growing too fast. After more than twenty days, you can see flower buds growing.
