How to manage water lilies in winter?

As the weather turns colder, many plants begin to enter a dormant period. Especially for flower lovers in northern regions, the severe cold in winter is a test for plants, such as the water lilies that many people love. In the north, winter temperatures sometimes drop below zero, so how do you manage water lilies in winter?

1. Deep water tank storage method

If you have a pond that is more than 1 meter deep, you can place the water lilies directly into the pond. Even if the water surface freezes, the water at the bottom of the pool will not freeze, so the pool is the safest place in winter. But not everyone has such conditions.

2. Outdoor deep pit method

In winter, permafrost forms on the ground, but there is usually no permafrost below 50 centimeters below the surface. Dig a hole no less than 50 cm deep outdoors, place the water lily with a pot in the hole, cover the pot surface with straw or plastic cloth, and then fill it with soil. If the soil is particularly cold, place straw or leaves on the soil surface to increase the insulation effect.

3. Sand Hiding Method

Prepare enough river sand to completely cover the rhizomes of the water lilies. Dig out the rhizomes of the water lily, simply clean the soil, bury the rhizomes in moist sand, and keep the sand moist. In an environment above 0 degrees, this method can safely survive the winter.

4. Refrigerator fresh-keeping layer method

The temperature of the refrigerator's fresh-keeping layer is usually between 0-4 degrees, which is suitable for the dormancy of water lilies. Water lilies can be stored in the refrigerator in the crisper layer.

5. Greenhouse method

The temperature in the greenhouse in winter generally does not drop below 5 degrees. If you have a greenhouse, you can place the pots in it and keep there is enough moisture in the pots.

6. Toilet Tank Method

Suitable for varieties with small rhizomes. Once clean, place the rhizomes in a nylon mesh bag and place in the toilet tank. The water in the tank is changed frequently and kept in a dark state, which is suitable for the water lilies to dormant. However, please note that it may affect flushing or water flow.

7. Indoor Law

If the indoor temperature can reach above 0 degrees in winter, the water lily can be moved indoors. Do not leave too much water in the pot. Keep 1 cm of moisture on the soil surface. Observe the water level at any time and replenish it in time. If the soil is too dry, the roots may rot.

The above are several ways for water lilies to overwinter. I hope you can find a method that suits you, help the water lilies survive the winter safely, and bloom beautiful flowers next year.
