How to grow flowers in winter when the indoor temperature is low

"Last year, a friend gave me a pot of cineraria, but it wilted after just one week on the balcony." Ms. Liu, a citizen, took a walk around the flower and bird market. She wanted to buy some bright flowers, but was worried that she wouldn't be able to take care of them well. It is reported that due to the special climate in winter, many citizens face maintenance difficulties when buying flowers. How can we ensure that gorgeous flowers safely spend the winter? Yesterday, the editor consulted Mr. Wu, a city flower-growing expert, about this question, and he taught the editor several tips.

Place it indoors as much as possible

"In winter, there are fewer local flower varieties in Qingdao, but more foreign varieties, and many of them come from the south, so special attention should be paid to preventing cold and frost." Wu Dexiang introduced that it is best to keep flowers indoors in winter. Flowers like cyclamen, cineraria, Christmas cactus, jasmine, Milan, and jasmine are suitable for placing in sunny places indoors, but they cannot be placed in windward places, so try not to open the windows.

Some cold-resistant flowers have different effects when placed indoors and outdoors. "Like chrysanthemums, their leaves are cold-resistant, but their flowers are not. If they are frozen, the flowers will soon wither. If they are properly cared for, flowers that bloom in summer can also bloom in winter. The cannas in my home bloomed in the summer and are still blooming now!" said Mr. Wu.

However, there are some flowers in Yangzhou that are not afraid of the cold and can be placed outdoors, such as winter plum, wintersweet, camellia, etc.; bright bamboo and ivy are also plants that are not afraid of the cold.

Maintenance: less watering and no fertilization

"For flowers placed indoors, you must water them less and stop fertilizing them. Otherwise, even if they do not die in winter, they will die in spring," Mr. Wu specially reminded.

It is reported that flowers are in a semi-dormant or dormant state in winter, and their metabolism stops. If you continue to water them, and if you add too much water, the roots of the flowers will lack oxygen and rot. Mr. Wu said that fertilizing flowers in winter will also burn them because the fertilizer cannot be excreted, and the flowers stop metabolizing and do not need fertilizer, so fertilizing in winter will be counterproductive.

Of course, some aquatic plants cannot live without water, such as daffodils, water bamboo, money grass, etc. In winter, they must maintain a certain temperature and cannot be cut off from water.

Protection: Winter flowers are afraid of spring breeze

"One thing that needs to be reminded is that plants that spend the winter indoors are very fragile after the spring and cannot be moved out of the room too early. They need to slowly adapt to the outdoor environment." Mr. Wu said that people who grow flowers should also pay attention that some plants do not die in the winter, but are more likely to die in the spring, especially when the spring breeze blows. This is because these plants have become weakened after a winter. Therefore, flowers that spend the winter indoors should not be placed in windy places, nor should they be moved outdoors too early. Generally, they should not be allowed to leave the house until after the Qingming Festival.

As a flower grower, Mr. Wu also reminds flower lovers that there are some types of flowers that are suitable for purchase rather than cultivation, such as chrysanthemums, daffodils, azaleas, cyclamen, etc. The market price is not expensive, but it is time-consuming and laborious to cultivate them yourself. It is better to buy a few pots of chrysanthemums and take them home to enjoy them. "For example, it takes half a year to cultivate three or five pots of chrysanthemums by yourself, and they don't grow as well as those grown on a large scale by flower farmers. It is too time-consuming and not worth it."
