Maintenance methods of five-color plum in four seasons

Spring maintenance methods

Potted plum blossoms should be repotted before being moved out of the house in spring. Sufficient basal fertilizer should be applied and the branches should be properly pruned. If they are young seedlings, they should be topped to promote side branches. For the plants after they have taken shape, pay attention to thinning out weak and diseased branches, and prune them appropriately to maintain a good tree shape and promote more new shoots.

For mature plants that do not leave seeds after flowering and fruiting, the remaining flowers should be picked off in spring to facilitate the growth of inflorescences in the leaf axils below. Cut off dead and weak branches, prune and shape them to keep the new branches beautiful, so that it will be easier to shape them when new branches sprout in spring.

Summer maintenance methods

The five-color plum is native to tropical America, and there are also a small number of wild ones in southern my country. It likes warm, humid and sunny environment and is not cold-resistant. The prepared bonsai can be placed outdoors in a sunny place for maintenance during the growing season from spring to autumn. It does not need to be shaded even in midsummer, but good ventilation is required. Insufficient light will cause the plant to grow too tall, with thin and long stems and branches and sparse flowering, which will seriously affect the viewing experience.

During the growing season, keep the potting soil moist to avoid excessive dryness, and pay attention to spraying water on the leaves to increase the air humidity; apply a thin fertilizer mainly composed of phosphorus and potassium once every 15 days or so to provide sufficient nutrients to make the plant bloom more.

Autumn maintenance methods

Autumn is the peak flowering season for the five-color plum. It is necessary to maintain sufficient sunlight so that the flower colors can be rich and varied, bright and vivid, and the leaves can also carry out sufficient photosynthesis to set off the bright flowers.

During the flowering period, pay attention to keep the soil in the pot moist and avoid dryness. If dry conditions occur, the flowers will easily wilt and new buds will not bloom easily, affecting the viewing of the flowers.

Winter maintenance tips

Move it to a sunny place indoors in winter. If the room temperature can be maintained above 15℃, the plant can grow and bloom normally. It should be watered, fertilized and pruned appropriately. If you cannot maintain such a high temperature, control watering, stop fertilizing, and let the plants go dormant. They can safely overwinter at temperatures above 8°C.
