Cockscomb cultivation methods and precautions

Cockscomb cultivation method

soil

Cockscomb is not very demanding in terms of environment, but it is best grown in well-drained sandy soil. If the drainage is poor, Cockscomb is susceptible to root rot.

Watering

Do not water cockscomb too much during the growing period, and also control watering after flowering. Water appropriately when the weather is dry, and drain in time on rainy days.

Fertilization

All axillary buds should be removed from the seedling stage. After the comb is formed, apply a thin layer of compound liquid fertilizer once every 10 days.

illumination

Cockscomb likes warm climate, sunshine and avoids cold. If grown in a shaded place, the inflorescence will be small and the ornamental value will be reduced. The most suitable growth temperature is 18-28℃. Growth is slow when the temperature is low, and the plant dies after winter.

Harvest

Cockscomb is generally harvested around the time of White Dew. The seeds gradually turn black and mature. The flower moss can be cut off in time and placed in a ventilated place to dry and thresh. The flowers and seeds can be managed separately and used as medicine separately.

Generally, the seed yield per mu is 300 jin and the flower yield is about 1,000 jin. When drying the flowers, go out early and come back late, and don't expose them to night dew to prevent them from deteriorating and reducing the efficacy. The seeds should be winnowed and stored in bags to prevent mildew and insects.

Precautions for Cockscomb Cultivation

Suitable for planting in sandy soil

Although cockscomb does not have high requirements for its growing environment, in order for it to grow and bloom more vigorously, it is best planted in high, dry, sunny, fertile, and well-drained sandy loam.

Pay attention to light during the growing period

Cockscomb needs sufficient light during its growing period, ensuring at least 4 hours of sunlight per day.

Stay hydrated in summer

Although cockscomb prefers dry air and avoids waterlogging, it has thick branches and lush leaves and consumes a lot of water during its growing period, so it must be adequately watered in the hot summer.

Control watering amount

During the maintenance of cockscomb, you must also prevent excessive water. When there are continuous rainy days, potted flowers should be moved indoors, and flowers planted in the ground should pay attention to drainage and watering should be moderate, otherwise the roots will easily rot.
