How to grow osmanthus at home

How to grow osmanthus at home

Causes of poor growth

The dormant temperature of osmanthus is between zero and five degrees. However, many cities now have central heating in winter, and the indoor temperature is mostly around 15 degrees. At such a temperature, osmanthus will break its dormancy and sprout branches and leaves early. Not only can it not accumulate nutrients through dormancy, but it also consumes a large amount of nutrients prematurely, resulting in a false prosperity. In spring, the delicate branches and leaves cannot withstand the beating of the cold and dry weather and will soon wilt and dry up. If this happens for 2-3 years in a row, the whole osmanthus plant will die.

Precautions

For families with a courtyard, you can place osmanthus in a sunny corner of the courtyard in winter. Dig a hole according to the size of the flowerpot, put the flowerpot into the hole, fill the soil to the level of the flowerpot, set up a frame, and cover it with plastic film. Friends who don’t have a courtyard can place osmanthus on the balcony, isolating the balcony from the indoor air and preventing the heater from entering the balcony. Relying on the natural temperature of the balcony, the dormancy requirements of osmanthus can be met.

Things to note when spring arrives

When spring comes, as the temperature gradually rises, you can open the balcony windows to make the temperature of the balcony adapt to the warmth outside. When the average temperature reaches above zero degrees, all the balcony windows can be opened.

Things to note for summer

Preventing dryness is an important part of growing osmanthus well. If the air is hot and dry and ventilation is poor, it will be very unfavorable for the growth and development of osmanthus. When opening windows for ventilation during home maintenance, you must increase the air humidity. You can spray water around the osmanthus frequently, or pour water on the ground, relying on the natural evaporation of water to create a moist environment for the osmanthus.
