How to divide hosta

How to divide hosta

1. Root division

April, May or October is the best season, and you can do it after the leaves turn yellow. First, move it out of the flowerpot, remove the soil from the roots, and divide the rhizomes into segments. Make sure to keep at least two to three buds on each rhizome and retain the root system, so as to increase its survival rate.

2. Plant in pots

Place the decomposed fertilizer as a substrate in the planting pot, and spread a layer of soil with larger particles, such as perlite, on the bottom to speed up its drainage. It must be placed in the order of coarse first and fine later, so that it is easier for the new plants to absorb nutrients. Bury the divided rhizomes in sandy loam. Do not plant too densely, just one or two plants in each pot, otherwise it will be detrimental to later flowering. After planting, water lightly and place in a sunny location.

3. Notes

Do not water too much in the later stage, otherwise the roots will not be able to breathe and will easily rot. It avoids exposure to the scorching sun and should be placed in a semi-shaded location in the summer. It should be kept in a sunny place in late autumn. After the frost, the temperature of the environment needs to be maintained at two to three degrees to help it survive the winter safely. When the temperature is low in January, you need to check whether the roots and rhizomes are frozen. If frost damage occurs, adjust the room temperature in time. At the end of winter, you need to loosen the soil properly and move it outdoors in April.
