The difference between Dutch iron and dragon blood tree, which one is easier to grow

1. Differences between the two

1. Different families and genera: From a classification point of view, the two are very different. The Dutch ironwood is a perennial woody plant of the genus Yucca in the Liliaceae family, while the dragon blood tree is a tree of the genus Dracaena in the Agavaceae family. The difference in families and genera means that the relationship is relatively distant, but according to past classifications, the Agavaceae family is also a type of Liliaceae.

2. Different appearance: Dutch iron and dragon blood tree look very similar at first glance, but if you look closely at the leaves, you can still find the difference between the two. The leaves of the former are narrower and lanceolate in shape, usually growing at the top of the stem, leathery in texture and very tough, but without petioles. The latter have leaves that are not as long, are sword-shaped, and are usually sharp.

3. Different habits: Dutch ironwood is produced in Central America and can generally be found in warm areas of Mexico and Guatemala. It is relatively resistant to drought and barrenness, and prefers a warm climate and well-lit environment. The temperature must be kept above 0℃ during the winter. Dracaena is native to the Canary Islands. It grows all year round and the temperature cannot drop below 5℃ in winter.

2. Which one is easier to raise?

Both of these plants come from tropical regions and are often easier to grow in the south of my country. However, since the winters in the north are relatively cold, if you want to ensure their safe wintering, you must keep them warm. It is usually better to keep them in a greenhouse. In addition, since both plants grow relatively tall, they must be pruned frequently when kept at home.
