The legend about the flame tree is actually very sad and beautiful.

It is said that a long time ago, in a western village, there was a beautiful girl in the village and everyone called her Beauty. When the beauty grew up, many people came to propose marriage to her. Her parents were very happy and wanted to marry her to a rich and powerful chief, but the beauty refused. The beauty said that she loved the hardworking Dutu.

Dutu was a farmer's son. He was good at farm work. He was also a famous archer and a good hunter. When the chief found out that the beauty was unwilling to marry him but was willing to marry Dutu, he wanted to separate the two. It happened that the Buganda Kingdom and Bvuma Island were at war at that time and needed to recruit soldiers, so the chief decided to let Dutu serve in the army.

Du Tu went to the front line. Before leaving, the beauty saw him off and told him to be brave. She hoped he could come back soon and that the beauty would always wait for him.

The war continued by the Lake Victoria. After Dutu left, the beauty always looked towards the lake from the hillside, but several months passed and Dutu still did not come back. One day, she asked the eagle to help check the lake and see when Dutu would come back. The eagle flew to the lake. Du Tu bravely rushed forward, but was shot by several hidden arrows and fell in a pool of blood. The eagle was very happy to see the enemy defeated. However, it was very sad to find Dutu's body and didn't know how to tell the beauty.

The beauty didn't get the news, so she asked the flying bee to go to the lake to have a look. When the bee came to the lake and saw the eagle crying, it understood everything. It couldn't bear to go back and tell the bad news. The beauty had been waiting, but she could not get what she wanted. She asked the sun for help, hoping that God would take her to the lake. The sun also knew about the war and that Du Tu was dead. It felt sorry for the beauty and shot out a beam of light. The beauty grabbed the beam and came to the lake.

But the beauty only saw the soldiers burying Dutu's body, so she prayed to God to melt her with fire and be together with her lover. The sun was so impressed by the beauty that he cremated her. The soldiers buried her together with Dutu. The next year, people came here to sweep the tomb of the lovers and found a beautiful tree growing on the grave. It was the flame tree, so some people call it the Lover's Tree.
