How to grow Cordyceps sinensis to make it more vigorous?

Cordyline is an evergreen shrub of the genus Cordyline in the Agavaceae family, distributed in tropical and subtropical regions in southern China. There are many varieties, the leaves are rich in color, the plant shape is beautiful, it can tolerate semi-shade, and it can be grown in potted plants indoors. So how can you grow Cordyceps sinensis to make it grow more vigorously? Let’s take a look below.

1. Lighting

Cordyline is shade-tolerant and can be grown outdoors in spring and autumn, but when the light is too strong or the temperature is high, it needs proper shading. Avoid strong light exposure in summer, and can be grown in a bright place indoors in winter.

2. Temperature

The suitable temperature for the growth of Cordyline is 20 to 25℃. Pay attention to cooling down in summer. The lowest tolerable temperature is 5℃. In winter, it should be maintained in an indoor environment with a temperature above 10℃.

3. Soil

Cordyline is not very demanding on the soil, but it is best to plant it in loose, fertile, well-drained slightly acidic soil. Avoid planting it in alkaline soil, which will cause poor plant growth and yellowing of leaves. A mixture of peat soil, garden soil and coarse river sand can be used.

4. Fertilization

During the vigorous growth period of Cordyline, it needs sufficient fertilizer . It is necessary to apply fertilizer in a timely and appropriate manner. A thin fertilizer can be applied once every 15 days. For plants grown in northern regions, in order to improve the soil pH, ferrous sulfate solution can be watered once every 15 days.

5. Watering

Cordyceps needs to be kept well-watered, especially in summer. Water when the soil is dry and water when it is wet, keep the soil moist and avoid waterlogging. In dry seasons, you can increase watering frequency appropriately to keep the leaves fresh.

6. Pruning and repotting

For plants that have been grown indoors for 1 to 2 years, the main stem of the plant can be shortened to promote the germination of side buds and leaf growth. Pruning of Cordyline in spring can be combined with repotting and changing the soil. The main stem should be cut off at a distance of 8 cm from the heart leaves. For plants with flower spikes, pruning should be done in the spring of next year.

7. Reproduction

Cordyline can be cultivated by sowing, cuttings, layering and root division, but cuttings and root division are the most commonly used methods. The stems and leaves of Cordyline are prone to produce adventitious buds. When the buds are 3 to 5 cm long, they can be cut and propagated, and they are very easy to survive.

8. Pests and diseases

Pay attention to observation during daily maintenance, and take timely measures to prevent and control pests and diseases once they are discovered. Keep the plants clean and prune dead and diseased branches in time to keep the plants ventilated and beautiful.
