The ghost orchid does not photosynthesize, so its color is not green, but white. The leaves have degenerated into scales and are attached to the side of the stem. Small white bell-shaped flowers will bloom in May and June. Because of its unique customs and magical appearance, it often appears in Chinese martial arts novels and is called the "ghost flower."

In martial arts novels, crystal orchid is generally regarded as three different things. The first view is that the ghost orchid is a magical herb that can bring the dead back to life; the second view is that the ghost orchid is an evil creature with supernatural powers that can kill people invisibly; the third view describes the fragrance of the ghost orchid as creepy. This is why the ghost orchid is called "ghost grass" or "dream orchid". Some people also say that the ghost orchid is a flower from the underworld, so it is called a saprophytic flower.
