Cultural Background of Nuphar

Cultural Background of Nuphar

Origin of the name

The leaves of D. crassifolia are nearly round and float on the water surface, with a V-shaped notch at the base. It was originally in the same genus Nymphaea as the water lily; however, D. crassifolia has a superior ovary and seeds without aril, which is very different from the genus Nymphaea, which has a median ovary and seeds with aril. The flowers of Nuphar are much smaller than those of water lilies and do not have as many beautiful floral structures. However, when a large area of Nuphar is yellow.

Cultivation history

Taiwan water hyacinth was collected by Japanese botanist Shimada Yaichi in Xinpu, Hsinchu County in 1915. The species name is to commemorate its collector Shimada Yaichi. The characteristic of this plant is that the leaves are nearly round and there are many hairs on the back of the leaves, but it is not easy to see with the naked eye and can only be seen clearly under a dissecting microscope. Secondly, the top of the stigma is split, and both sides of each lobe are red, making Taiwan water hyacinth more ornamental than other types of water hyacinth.

Ancient Books Narrative

"I like moss and bamboo, but duckweed has no fixed place to stay." The "duckweed" in the poem is a combination of "duckweed" and "duckweed", which are two different things and have no direct connection with "duckweed". Plants like duckweed float on the water surface; duckweed is a plant of the genus Erigeron in the Asteraceae family. Its fruit has pappus, which floats in the wind when mature. Therefore, the word "duckweed" is used to describe migration and having no fixed residence. The duckweed discussed in this article is not a floating plant. Its roots are fixed in the mud at the bottom of the water.
