How to grow watermelon on the balcony

How to grow watermelon on the balcony

Preparation

Select pot and prepare soil

Prepare a larger flowerpot, fill it with garden soil, choose looser soil, and add some decomposed organic fertilizer if conditions permit.

Seed selection

For balcony planting, you should buy small watermelon varieties, such as Black Beauty and Yellow Jade. If you want to use the seeds left over from eating watermelon to plant directly, the ones that grow will definitely be different. It is better to directly buy excellent varieties! When purchasing, ask the merchant for small watermelons, as large watermelons are difficult to grow on a balcony.

Planting

Seed Soaking

Soaking seeds at high temperature will help them germinate better. Soak the seeds in warm water for 3 to 4 hours, take them out and place them in a wet towel for 2 to 3 hours.

sowing

Sprinkle the treated seeds directly into the watered soil and cover with 1 cm thick dry soil. Water after 4 to 5 days. Water immediately as the soil will become hardened easily. All that remains is to wait for the seedlings to emerge.

Maintenance

Growth: Watermelon is a vine plant. When the seedlings grow up, let them grow in one direction, or pull up a bamboo pole or rope next to it so that the seedlings can grow upwards!

Fertilization: Apply some compound fertilizer once every 5 to 10 days. Add more rice water.

Pollination: Watermelons need pollination to bear fruit. Watermelon itself has male and female flowers, which require artificial pollination. The pollen of the male flowers is applied to the stigma of the female flowers to assist pollination.

Harvest: The melons are ready to harvest when they are big and the patterns on the skin become clear.

Special reminder: Don’t be greedy when planting too many melons. Plant one seedling in one pot. Look at this flower lover’s unintentional work, wasting seeds and emotions.
