How to grow peas on the balcony

How to grow peas on the balcony

Planting season:

It is usually sown in March-April. In the north, planting can begin as soon as the thaw occurs in early spring. In the south, sowing can be done in all seasons, but autumn and winter are the best seasons, and most of them are planted from September to early November.

Seedling cultivation

Choose seeds with full grains and no diseases or insect pests, and select them with salt water before planting. Place the peas in salt water (40g salt for 100g water), discard the seeds floating on the water surface, and sterilize the remaining seeds with hot water before use.

The suitable germination temperature for seeds is 18~22℃, and they can germinate as long as the temperature is not lower than 5℃. Sprinkle the seeds directly into the soil, cover with 3 cm of soil, and sprinkle a layer of wood ash on the soil surface.

The growth temperature of seedlings is 14~22℃, and they can withstand low temperatures of 4~5℃. Do not water for 3 to 5 days after planting. Water appropriately after a week, but do not water as long as the leaves are not wilted. Apply organic fertilizer once 10 days after germination.

Two weeks after germination, when 1 to 2 leaves have grown, it can be transplanted. Plant 3 to 5 plants in each pot and apply a small amount of compound fertilizer.

Daily Management

When the pea seedlings grow to 30 to 40 cm, insert a few bamboo poles into the pot to pull the pea seedlings upwards, making sure the stems and leaves are evenly distributed.

Peas prefer a cool environment and are not resistant to high temperatures; the suitable temperature for flowering and fruiting is 15~20℃; they are not drought-resistant or water-resistant, and require the soil surface to be moist but not watered.

When applying fertilizer, use more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, and avoid using nitrogen fertilizers. Apply decomposed organic fertilizer once every 10 days during the growing season.

Pea seedlings grow slowly and can be planted together with corn, eggplant, etc.

Harvest

The beans can be picked 2-3 days after they emerge, or you can wait until the seeds in the pods are fully grown and then harvest them while the pods are still green.
