Can blueberry seedlings be grown from blueberry fruits?

Blueberries can be propagated through seeds, division and cuttings, so blueberry fruits can be grown into blueberry seedlings. Remove the blueberry seeds from the pulp, wash them in clean water, then sow them on the surface of thick, soft, weakly alkaline culture soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil. However, although blueberries purchased from supermarkets can be planted, they may not germinate. Because the blueberries you buy are generally processed to preserve the quality of the seeds.

How to breed blueberry seeds

1. Seed treatment

Rinse the leftover blueberry seeds in clean water to remove the shriveled grains and residual seed pulp floating on the water surface. Blueberry seeds will enter dormancy once they leave the fruit, so they need to be vernalized at low temperatures. Put the seeds in a wet cloth bag and refrigerate it in a refrigerator at 0 to 4 degrees. You can put the cloth bag in a plastic box to keep it moist. Take it out of the refrigerator after about 30 days and expose it to the sun for a day to germinate.

2. Seedling raising time

Blueberry seedlings are generally grown in spring, and the best time is from February to April. When it comes to seedling raising time, soak the seeds in a solution of gibberellin (920) to break their dormancy. Gibberellic acid is first dissolved in alcohol and then poured into water with a concentration of 400 mg/L, that is, 0.4 grams of gibberellin is added to one kilogram of water and soaked for 12 hours.

3. Planting seeds

Blueberry seeds cannot be sown directly in the soil. They need to be sown in special substrates. Before sowing, you can collect fresh and moist moss from rivers, lakes and ditches. After cleaning the moss, spread it on the bottom of the prepared container, and sprinkle the seeds evenly on the moss. You can bring some soaked gibberellin solution. Cover with plastic wrap to keep it moist, and use a toothpick to poke some small holes in the plastic wrap to allow for ventilation. Place it in an environment of 15-25 degrees and spray water frequently to keep it moist. Generally, after about 40 days, the seeds will turn white and germinate. After germination, the seeds need to continue to grow in the moss substrate container for a period of time.

4. Transplantation

When the seedlings grow to about 8 cm and have two true leaves, they can be removed from the moss substrate container and transplanted into a seedling pot. Prepare a seedling pot with a diameter of about 30 cm and fill it with culture matrix. The matrix should be rich in organic matter and preferably slightly acidic with a pH of about 5.5. Fill the flowerpot with substrate soil, use a shovel to dig a small hole about 10 cm in the middle, take the blueberry seedlings out of the moss container, transplant them into the flowerpot hole, seal the hole with substrate and compact it, finally pour enough water on it and place it in a cool place. It can see the sun after 10 days, but pay attention to sun protection in summer. When the plants grow up, they can be transplanted to the field according to specific conditions.
